I was born close to the sea.  Close enough during my childhood for my mother, if I faced any difficulties, to suggest these would be resolved while having an enjoyable walk along the front at West Kirby!   And so they were, as breathing in the fresh air and moving along in the wind, listening to a sympathetic voice, I realised there were actions I could take to make progress”   …. My first experience of coaching?

Liz began her working career through a 2 year NHS National Management Training Scheme.  Thrown into experiential learning, it began with a week as a ward orderly, then helping a ‘staff nurse’.  Hotfoot next, time was spent in the pharmacy, then out with the ambulance crews, observing operating theatres in action, A&E and finally the mortuary!

What Liz also did was keep a diary of her experiences; key things she was learning and descriptions of her feelings and attitudes.  The impact of doing this has stayed with her.  On reflection she began asking the question ‘how many different cultures are at play within and surrounding any organisation? ‘

After a range of management jobs, and starting a family, Liz gained a Masters Degree in Management Learning from Lancaster University, specialising in managing transitions, quality improvement and action learning.  She then gained valuable personal development by first working as an independent consultant and then joining a non-profit making educational consultancy.  There she enjoyed working in teams on public & private sector development projects, including:

  • A coaching and mentoring programme for GPs in Yorkshire
  • Strategy development with Shell in Aberdeen
  • Communications and emotional intelligence initiatives with the Crown Prosecution Service
  • Coaching and managing change processes with the NHS Leadership Programme
  • Problem solving & feed-back skills for team leaders in the Environment Agency
  • Assessment centres & personal development planning for managers & personnel directors in collaboration with Leeds University
  • Culture change & action learning programmes with GCHQ’s internal training team
